The Year 2026 Hailed as the Era of the Croaking Craze.
While I found the recent indie games event was highly engaging, my biggest takeaway was a personal epiphany: I am convinced that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.
A surprising total of five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—prominently include these leaping protagonists. Considering a gathering of frogs is known as an army, it feels they are launching an invasion.
A Legacy of Leaping
Croaking characters are not at all new to the interactive entertainment. From the arcade classic Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a special place. However, their prevalence has noticeably surged in recent times.
A quick search for "frog game" on Steam unveils an overwhelming flood of results. Granted, some of these are novelty titles, a significant portion are legitimate amphibian adventures.
Tracking the Tadpole Trend
To grasp this phenomenon, I undertook a detailed review into the last half-decade of frog-related gaming on Steam. My criteria was admittedly subjective, focusing on games with frogs in the title or featured in screenshots.
The findings paint a clear picture: a steady increase from under 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.
This significant surge prompts the question: what's driving this craze? The frog's rising status in the public consciousness is partially apparent elsewhere, for example the revival of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. Yet, the explosion in gaming appears uniquely pronounced.
Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage
Honestly, this is a movement I can fully endorse. Frogs possess natural design advantages for game developers.
- Charming Creatures: They are incredibly easy to be designed as endearing characters that tend to be a fan favorite in any game.
- Dynamic Mechanics: Their stretchy limbs and sticky tongues lend themselves to a myriad of creative gameplay ideas.
A number of the announced projects directly leverage these traits. Examples include the tongue-grappling in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.
What the Future Holds
So, what is the outlook for 2026? Given five frog games publicly revealed before the year has officially commenced—and the possibility for more—the stage is set for it to be the biggest year yet.
If these games are received positively—and based on past trends, games from this showcase tend to succeed—we might just be on the verge of a full-blown amphibian entertainment revival.
