Nuno Declares Building the Hammers Philosophy His Top Focus
Nuno Espírito Santo believes it will be a gradual process to build a distinct identity at the London club. Having previously managed Forest, who is settling in to his new position, aims to connect with the club’s culture on an emotional level.
Absorbing the West Ham Way
Hired after the abrupt departure of the previous manager, Nuno explained that longstanding staff have been educating him about life at West Ham. Upon questioning about his understanding of the team’s historic philosophy, he grinned and stated that it is interpreted differently—some see it as attacking play, while others value passion and resilience.
“That’s what I’m working to grasp every day,” Nuno commented. “It’s more than learning—we have to feel it. Patience is required to feel it. When it becomes part of us, it’s vital to embed it within.”
He highlighted that feeling is what counts, not just intellectual understanding. On the topic of playing identity, Nuno admitted they are a long way off from making it a reality. “It’s not enough the ‘West Ham way’—we have to develop it, let’s live it.”
Early Days and Future Challenges
Nuno’s tenure got underway with an positive 1-1 draw on the road. Questioned about how close he is to developing a recognizable philosophy, he answered, “In my opinion very far. It’s difficult and needs total commitment at the club. However, it’s our main focus.”
Frequently, there is a desire from the fanbase for exciting football. The former manager, historically achieving modern-era coach, later encountered pressure due to his practical style. Those who followed also struggled altering the team’s style in the years following his exit.
Style of Play and Player Roles
The responsibility now lies with Nuno to choose whether winning are more important than entertainment. The team have let in fourteen goals in their first six Premier League games and find themselves in the relegation zone.
“What influences the way we play is not just the manager,” he explained. “It depends on the players that influences how we play. We must find a balance between defense and attack. We cannot going forward without structure, since that creates opportunities for the opposition. We must maintain defensive shape, but always focusing on our next move once we have the ball.”
Player Availability
Nuno’s side may see the return of key defenders ahead of the next fixture at Arsenal. Also, the head coach hinted at a possible recall for a seasoned player who was omitted in the last match. He previously worked under Nuno previously, though his loan spell was ended early.
