European Union Maritime Forces Rescue Sailors After Somalia Piracy Incident on Oil Tanker
EU naval forces have safely freed two dozen crew members from a Maltese-flagged petroleum vessel that was attacked by sea robbers off the shoreline of Somalia.
The Hellas Aphrodite, which was carrying petrol from India to South Africa, was taken over on the recent incident when armed pirates opened fire with machine guns and explosive projectiles before boarding the vessel.
The crew secured themselves inside a secure safe room while the pirates assumed command of the marine transport.
Successful Rescue Operation
A Spanish warship, operating under the European Union's maritime security operation, reached the ship on Friday afternoon. Special forces entered the craft and discovered all two dozen sailors unharmed.
"The crew is safe and no harm have been documented. During the incident, they remained in the secure area in direct contact with command center," officials stated, adding that a "demonstration of power" had convinced the pirates to leave the vessel before the naval unit reached the location.
Continuing Danger
Authorities added that the danger level in the region "continues to be serious" as the pirates are continue to be in the vicinity.
The rescue operation involved a aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicle and surveillance aircraft. Shortly before, another ship in the identical region was targeted by a fast boat but successfully avoided it.
Resurgence of Piracy
This event marks the most recent in a spate of attacks that have raised alarms about a renewal of piracy in the area.
Piracy operations had declined when global maritime security and protective protocols were implemented after peaking more than a decade ago.
However, assaults by militant groups on vessels in the Arabian Sea, which have been conducted for the past two years, have caused vessels to be diverted through the African coastline - opening up new opportunities for Somali gangs.
Statistical Overview
- Multiple piracy cases of piracy took place off the shoreline of Somalia in the previous year
- Several vessel takeovers were recorded among these events
- A single case of maritime crime was reported in the preceding year
Industry professionals are closely watching the developments as vessel operators navigate these increasingly dangerous shipping lanes.
